Finish carpentry

Finish carpentry in South Orange County

Tight miters, level runs, consistent reveals.

Finish carpentry is where a craftsman shows, because every mistake is at eye level and painted white. A miter that opens by a millimeter, a reveal that wanders along a run of casing, a shelf that reads level until something round is put on it — none of it is structural, and all of it is what people notice.

Dan came to this from shaping surfboards, which is a trade built entirely on tolerances you can feel with your hand before you can see them. The habit carried over. It is also the work he enjoys most, which tends to show in the result.

Trim and casing, interior doors hung and adjusted, built-in shelving, closets that use the whole space, cabinet repairs and small custom pieces built for a spot nothing off the shelf will fit.

A run of trim is judged by its joints. Getting them tight — and keeping them tight once the caulk and paint are on — is a matter of patience and a sharp blade, not of speed.

Common questions

Can you build to fit an odd space?

That is usually why people call. An alcove, a sloped ceiling, a gap beside a stair — those are the spots where nothing off the shelf fits and something built on site does.

Do you paint or stain what you build?

Yes. Painting is a service in its own right here, so a built-in can be finished by the same person who built it rather than handed to a second trade.

Will my new trim match the existing profile?

Where the profile is still available, yes. Where it is not, Dan will show you the closest match and where the transition should fall so it is not obvious.
